Southern Company Instrument and Controls Engineer in Wilsonville, Alabama

Job Summary:

We are currently looking for a skilled individual to take on the role of Instrumentation, Controls, and Design and Project Support at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) in Wilsonville, Alabama. Key tasks for this position involve PLC configuration, crafting functional control logic, designing human/machine interfaces, and providing support during troubleshooting, checkout, and commissioning processes. Design duties include creating P&IDs, choosing appropriate instrumentation, sizing control valves, selecting materials, preparing detailed design drawings and field packages, drafting specifications, evaluating bids, participating in design and safety reviews, and maintaining Control Systems.

Project Engineering will include serving as the engineering lead for design aspects of various projects, including large capital and maintenance upgrades, across environmental initiatives, new power generation (gas and renewables), control systems, and gas and electric utility transmission systems. This role manages the engineering scope, budgets, and schedules, acting as the primary engineering contact for project managers.

Job Experience and Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university required

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in the engineering field

  • Possession of a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate or PE license is required.

  • Prior experience with DCS and PLC process control configuration/programming is advantageous.

  • Candidates with a background in instrumentation and controls design for chemical process facilities preferred.

  • Valid driver's license required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of troubleshooting control issues, analyzing systems, and developing control strategies, with experience gained through education or relevant work.

  • An elevated level of motivation with the eagerness and capacity to learn new concepts is essential.

  • Candidates should have experience managing projects from concept to commissioning and startup and be capable of leading small teams and coordinating with other disciplines.

  • Project scheduling experience to meet milestones is desirable.

  • Familiarity with process instrumentation, including transmitters, switches, valves, and motors, is preferred.

  • Experience with the development of P&IDs, loop sheets, motor elementaries, interconnection/schematic diagrams, and ISA instrument data sheets is advantageous.

  • Proficiency with Rockwell software (FactoryTalk, Vantagepoint, Viewpoint, etc.) is beneficial.

  • Experience with Microsoft (SQL, Windows 10/11, Server 2019+) is preferred.

  • Candidates should have experience in one of the following areas:

  • Design or project management related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for industrial projects.

  • Leadership experience, whether formal or informal, directing the activities of team members.

  • Direct involvement in supporting operations in plant facilities (Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil, etc.), or electric utility generation and/or transmission systems.

  • Budget and schedule management skills are necessary.

  • A solid understanding of project change control and strong analytical skills to evaluate progress and develop solutions are required.

  • Knowledge of and experience with code application is preferred; the ability to read, interpret, and apply codes and standards is desired.

  • Candidates must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate good time management and organizational skills.

  • Comfort with working in Chemical plant environments is necessary.

  • Experience with MCC and Power Distribution systems is preferred

  • The incumbent must balance customer satisfaction with project constraints.
