Brief Summary of Work for this Position

CMS strives to support the computational requirements of researchers and instructors from coastal and marine-related efforts at

UNCW.

CMS has computing needs that include supporting researchers with software and coding needs, and aiding instructors with computation needs and instruction for students focused on the use of High-Performance Computing (

HPC) and Research Storage. Emphasis for this position includes current projects including genomics and bioinformatics, oceanographic and coastal modeling, computational models of chemical structures, video and photo processing, and sensor development. Incorporation of artificial intelligence and machine learning into coastal and marine research is a priority. There are approximately 25 research-active research laboratories utilizing research computation. A number of courses will take advantage of the service each semester to provide students with experience using

HPC resources.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master of Science in a computational or natural sciences discipline and at least two years' of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree and at least 3 years' of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Experience with shared memory parallel programming.
  • Proficiency with a high-level programming language such as Python, Fortran, or C++.
  • Proficiency using a Linux shell environment.
  • Proficiency using a job scheduling system (such as Slurm or LSF).
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal day to day management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with researchers (faculty members and students).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other university stakeholders.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • PhD in computational or natural sciences discipline preferred.
  • Two years of experience using shared HPC resources and experience assisting or training others. (Experience may include time while doing graduate studies.)
  • Experience with GPU programming for scientific/engineering computations.
  • Two or more years of administrative experience on a Linux platform.
  • Experience with Python or R, particularly working in multi-user environment.
  • Two or more years of software programming experience.

CMS) is recognized both nationally and internationally for conducting research that contributes to the understanding of environmental processes and problems.

CMS strives to engage communities to address societal issues and promote use-inspired innovations. Research, education, and outreach at

CMS includes a variety of fields such as genomics and bioinformatics, physical oceanographic modeling; natural products chemistry and structural analyses; marine geology; marine technology; aquaculture; environmental sciences, marine policy, human health, and sociology. Currently there are more than 100 active research programs supported by

CMS and over 140 scientists, staff and students broadly associated with the unit. The teaching and research facility located on the Intracoastal Waterway in southeastern North Carolina features state of the art core facilities in spectrometry and spectroscopy, light stable isotopes, biotechnology, aquaculture,

DNA and water quality analysis as well as running seawater systems, a coastal workboat fleet and a wide range of oceanographic equipment that are available to all

CMS researchers.

CMS supports educational programs related to marine science, including the Applied Coastal and Ocean Science Ph.D. program and MS Marine Science degree as well as courses and students from various marine-science related academic departments across the breadth of

UNCW. It also supports several outreach entities, including NC Sea Grant, the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve, and Marine Quest, among others.
