$15/hour(pre-tax), plus $1000 monthly housing allowance (pre-tax) ($250 per week)

Visitor Services Information Resource Assistant (Two Positions available)

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

Stewards in partnership with the Red Rock Ranger District seeks a Visitor Services Information Resource Assistant, the primary purpose of which is the dissemination of information and interpretive assistance to the public. The Resource Assistant will provide maps, recommendations, Leave No Trace/Tread Lightly, Environmental Preparedness, and other District and Forest specific information to a diverse group of visitors to the Coconino National Forest. The incumbent will assist FS personnel in interpreting and creating their own displays within a Forest Service Contact Center that is full of educational displays, maps, and activities for all ages.

Duty location is on the Red Rock Ranger District but may span the Visitor Information Services Center, Palatki Heritage Site, and Crane Petroglyph Heritage Site. Field work may necessitate walking on steep, uneven terrain and during inclement weather including hot, dry days with temperatures in the low 100’s and cold winter days with temperatures in the low 30’s.

Position Responsibilities will include:

· Performs duties as assigned at the Red Rock Ranger Station Visitor Center including staffing the reception desk, answering phones, responding to voicemails, stocking printed guides and interpretive materials, and preforming light facility maintenance.

· Responds to a variety of inquiries regarding Forest Service activities, programs, exhibits, facilities, policies, and functions.

· Provides guidance to the public on rules and regulations regarding on-unit activities and attempts to gain public cooperation in protecting resources from damage and pollution.

· Serves as Collection Officer to sell forest timber permits and other items, such as maps and passes, in accordance with manual and handbook requirements.

· Is held responsible for submitting and accounting for collected monies using approved computer programs and records.

· Coordinates with staff specialists and public affairs office to provide the latest, most accurate and appropriate information to the public.

· Provides interpretive answers to a wide variety of visitor interests, such as the identification of local flora and fauna, geological formations, cultural and natural history, and responsible recreation ethics.

· Plans and presents interpretive talks, guided activities, and programs for visitors, local schools, and other groups.

· Uses a variety of tools, such as drawings, activity specific tools, and audio/visual equipment, as interpretive aids for presentations.

· Shadows other specialists in the field to assist in a variety of projects including wildlife surveys, range management, archeological surveys, commercial use inspections, and trail maintenance.

Minimum Requirements:

· Be able to work independently and as a team member.

· Be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of visitors that are looking for information, fielding complaints, etc.

· Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).

· Must be 18 years or older.

· Must have High School Diploma or GED.

· Must have or be able to obtain a post-secondary degree by end of service (Associate’s or higher)

Preferred Qualifications:

· Be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions for moderate periods of time.

· Be able to obtain collection officer qualifications

Benefits:

· $1,000.00/month living allowance. (pre-tax, $250 per week)

· $50/monthly commuting allowance. (pre-tax)

· $4,750.00 Professional Development and Travel fund.

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
