Summary About the Position: Serve as Master of a derrickboat engaged in channel maintenance, marine construction, and hoisting services. Responsible for the proper maintenance, operation, administration and safety of the vessel. This is an open continuous announcement. The first cut-off date is 04/26/2024. Responsibilities Direct or perform the operation of hoisting and swinging engines on derrickboat engaged in removing obstructions and shoals in navigation channels. Make heavy lifts to and from docks, other vessels, and from underwater areas. Supervise or direct and coordinate the activities of the crew sweeping and probing waterways for rocks and obstructions; removing debris and wrecks, etc. Place vessel in position and direct the placement of anchors and fastening of lines, the operation of deck winches, and the anchoring of the boat. Perform routine maintenance and repair work such as replacing work on broken engine parts, valves, cables, etc., Operate clamshell buckets, rock hooks, orange peels, and grapples used in digging, lifting, and depositing dredged materials. Prepare detailed daily and monthly reports of operations. Train new employees. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Master Derrickboat without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common Operator, Master Derrickboat tasks including operating various types of cranes using assorted levers, pedals, and controls. Ability to hoist and handle heavy equipment and materials and working in tandem with other cranes; acknowledging the appropriate weight limits and angles to lift loads safely. Ability to work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Moderate physical effort is normally required in steering the vessel, walking, and climbing. Somewhat greater effort is required in accomplishing housekeeping and general maintenance work. Close hand and eye coordination is required when operating controls to maneuver vessel in traffic, in confined areas, and during derrick operations. Work is performed both inside and outside aboard floating plant in all types of weather. There is danger of drowning due to accident or storm (and particularly due to improper lifting or handling of heavy objects which may cause the derrick to overturn). There is further danger of injury due to blasting operations. Is subject to cuts, bruises, sprains, and broken bones. The possibility of falling or slipping on wet or icy decks, ladders, etc., is always present. Although hazards involved are less than those of subordinate jobs because of supervisory functions, there is still exposure to unpleasant noise, heat, and fumes produced by the engine. Is exposed to dirt and grease when making minor repairs to vessel and machinery.
