Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) seeks an entry-level Hazardous Material Specialist to join the Waste Technical Services organization. The Hazardous Materials Specialist will provide characterization and program support for all radiological and non-radiological waste types (Low Level Waste, High Level Waste, Mixed Waste). This position will provide broad-based technical and regulatory support for ongoing WRPS waste management efforts and technical support for specific projects. The Hazardous Material Specialist will also perform calculations to support waste management and characterization efforts and create and identify documentation to be revised based on the regulations, results of calculations and other efforts. Support effective implementation and regulatory compliance of waste management programs.

  • Incorporates conventional engineering or scientific practices to technical requirements to meet WRPS' Waste Program needs.

  • Assists with preparation of waste stream profile technical documentation to support calculations and incorporates into Waste Certification Plans.

  • Assists with providing guidance and direction to facility personnel involved with waste management, packaging, and transportation.

  • Performs field walk downs to ensure field work is performed to meet waste stream profiles, calculations and procedures.

  • Reviews work packages for potential generation of waste streams.

  • Assists with verification for compliance with WRPS' waste acceptance criteria requirements.

  • Assists with preparation of Waste Program manuals and procedures.

  • Assist with packaging and shipment of all hazardous and radioactive materials and assure this is completed in accordance with all federal, state and local regulations.

  • Evaluate hazardous materials packaging, transportation, handling and associated activities for compliance and acceptability.

  • Implement programs and procedures for packaging, transport and disposal of hazardous materials.

Required Qualifications

Grade 13:

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a scientific discipline or a related field or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Grade 14:

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a scientific discipline or a related field; and

  • Two (2) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with application of Washington State, DOE and DOT regulations and requirements.

  • Good written/oral communication skills.

Compensation & Benefits

Grade 13:

Hiring Range Minimum: $64,788

Hiring Range Maximum: $81,663

Grade 14:

Hiring Range Minimum: $71,200

Hiring Range Maximum: $89,800

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
