​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

​​Azure Database for PostgreSQL is one of the newest services added to the family of relational database services provided in Microsoft Azure. Our team is building one of the most advanced distributed database services on top of PostgreSQL and provides it as a service on Azure.   

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer with experience developing PostgreSQL engine, extensions or tools to be part of our journey. You will be working in a diverse geographically distributed team environment where collaboration and innovation are valued. Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Software Engineer and PostgreSQL expertise to join our Azure Database for PostgreSQL team. You will play a crucial role in driving development and innovation on Azure. You will be at the forefront of shaping the future of vector database and AI/GenAI database solutions in the cloud.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, architecture, and development on Azure Database for PostgreSQL.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement innovative solutions that enhance scalability and performance.

  • Provide technical insight and guidance to the engineering team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality code and solutions.

  • Conduct performance analysis, troubleshooting, and optimization to deliver a seamless user experience.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in vector databases, AI/GenAI databases, cloud technologies, and related fields to drive continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to the open-source community and engage with customers to understand their needs and requirements. ​

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • · Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Pythono OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Rust programming experience

  • Experience developing PostgreSQL engine, extensions or tools

  • Experience developing vector databases and AI/GenAI features

  • Knowledge or familiarity with GenAI and vector database research

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
