Summary:

Sheet Metal and Tinsmith Workers are responsible for tinsmith, coppersmith, and engraving duties on locomotive, passenger cars, engines and related equipment.

Pipe Fitters are responsible for replacing, installing, cutting, fabricating and inspecting all manner of hoses, piping, valves and tubing on locomotives, passenger cars and engines.

Responsibilities :

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Sheetmetal work consists of both pipefitting and tinsmith duties.

  • Pipefitter work consists of cutting, binding, threading, repairing and applying pipe connections to passenger cars and diesel locomotives. Also consists of layout, installation of piping for high-pressure steam in yards, shops and buildings. Pipefitter will be required to inspect/repair equipment, which will include stooping, crouching, and kneeling in confined spaces.

  • Tinsmith work consists of layout, fabrication, assembly and installation of all types of sheet metal and/or their substitutes. Also includes complete air conditioning ducting in passenger cars. Tinsmith will be required to handle sheets of metal 4' x 8'.

    Qualifications :

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.

  • Ability to perform all pipe installation duties including welding, and layout and fabrication work, including soldering and brazing.

  • Must possess thorough knowledge of associated hand tools and sheet metal shop mechanics.

  • Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather conditions.

Must be able to walk short distances (80-100 feet) frequently during an 8-hour shift and greater distances (up to 1000 feet or more) daily.

  • Knowledgeable in shop mathematics.

    Preferred/Desirable Skill/Qualification :

  • Four years experience at the various skills of the trade and/or apprenticeship served.

Rate: $42.601 is the 100% hourly rate of pay.

70% - 1st 240 days of compensated service.

70% - 2nd 240 days of compensated service.

75% - 3rd 240 days of compensated service.

80% - 4th 240 days of compensated service.

90% - 5th 240 days of compensated service.

90% - 6th 240 days of compensated service.

95% - 7th 240 days of compensated service.

100% - After 1,680 days of compensated service.

75% - 2nd 240 days of compensated service.

100% - After 1,200 days of compensated service.

Note: Consistent with Rule 67B of the IBEW Agreement, in the case of a transfer into the craft, employees will be subject to enter the wage progression at the 70% rate.

Other Information:

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Absence control violation(s) or more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
