Project Engineer Vacuum Thin Film Coating Technologies

Overview

Fraunhofer USA, Inc., located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, is seeking a highly motivated, reliable and technically competent individual to join our Coating Technologies team as a Project Engineer. As a Project Engineer you will play an integral part in advancing our vacuum thin film coatings for a wide range of industries. Our current program focuses on the advancement of carbon-based and ceramic materials for wear, optical, biomedical, electronic and energy applications.

This is a full-time salaried position with benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Member of a highly skilled and interdisciplinary team advancing physical and chemical vapor deposition PVD/CVD processes.
  • Executing engineering projects in areas related to advanced thin film applications.
  • Operation, maintenance, setup and modification of coating machines and other laboratory equipment.
  • R&D process development, monitoring and experimental planning
  • Thin film characterization, data analysis and technical report writing on results of assigned engineering projects.
  • Help the team ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program (ISO9001) requirements. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • BS. required in Engineering, Physics or Science related to the field or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience in a research setting, or a working knowledge of thin film materials science, or physical and chemical vapor deposition.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to independently identify, develop and implement scientific solutions to practical problems.
  • Motivated self-starter with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Able to work independently, collaboratively and effectively across different job functions.
  • Able to set priorities and adapt to changing needs as well as the flexibility to function well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment and work practices.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse and international team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

* Preferred Qualifications*

  • 2+ years operating experience of physical and chemical vapor deposition equipment and technical knowledge of thin film development including carbon materials and ceramic coatings such as oxides and nitrides.
  • Prior experience with material characterization, such as XRD, AFM, SEM, Raman is strongly desired.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD).
  • Ability to work in compliance with ISO-certified QMS system.
