JOB TITLE:

• WIC Registered Dietician

PURPOSE OF JOB:

• The WIC Registered Dietician is the lead nutrition professional for the WIC Program.
• The WIC RD provides nutrition counseling to high-risk WIC participants, with the goal of improving client knowledge and behaviors regarding nutrition and wellness.
• The WIC RD is also responsible for nutrition education training of the WIC staff and monitoring of the delivery of nutrition education by Community Nutrition Workers (CNWs).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Establishes and maintains a care plan for each WIC client identified as High Risk.
• Provides nutritional counseling session(s) for individuals identified as High Risk.
• Conducts health assessments, to include measurements of stature, weight, hemoglobin and dietary evaluation
• Approves the issuance of specialty infant formulas prescribed by physicians.
• Develops and reviews nutrition education materials for accuracy, age appropriateness and cultural appropriateness.
• Provides in-service training for staff regarding nutrition education and counseling skills, including motivational interviewing and patient-centered counseling techniques.
• Observes counseling skills of Community Nutrition Workers (CNWs).
• Provides group nutritional counseling sessions, when appropriate
• Assists in writing local agency protocols.
• Participates in training in nutrition and program policies/procedures provided by ADHS.
• Participates in internal audits by reviewing client charts for nutrition education documentation.
• Assists staff in the development of group education classes.
• Represents the MCHC WIC Program in pertinent ADHS WIC Program committees and groups for nutritionists and registered dieticians, or as otherwise designated.
• Represents the MCHC WIC Program to the public and in pertinent community coalitions, as delegated.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds when stocking supply room.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Considerable knowledge of nutrition and health promotion/disease prevention.
• Ability to establish good communication with clients to maximize the effectiveness of nutrition counseling.

• Proficiency in patient-centered education and motivational interviewing.
• Demonstrates multicultural awareness and respect for diversity of the clients served.
• Ability to document nutritional risk and nutrition counseling provided, per ADHS WIC policies and procedures.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, the community and co-workers.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor\'s Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) required
• A minimum of two years\' experience in community or clinical nutrition practice preferred.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSU E:

• Registered Dietician, per ACEND.
• Must complete required ADHS Learning Management System (LMS Courses) within 60 days of hire.
• Must complete 35-40 hour breastfeeding course within one year of date of hire.
