Job Summary and Qualifications

HCA’s Care Transformation and Innovation (CT&I) team delivers a step change in that direction through clinically led integration of digital and AI technologies into care.

The Principal Data Scientist - Feature Engineering will play a critical role in helping us achieve this goal by leading HCA’s efforts to convert raw data into valuable features for use in enterprise data products and machine learning models.

This individual will provide technical, product-oriented, and organizational leadership for best practices, frameworks, tooling, and delivery of production grade feature stores and data products. They will be expected to bring hands-on expertise in EDA, data normalization, feature creation, data transformation, feature extraction, model benchmarking, statistics and data science techniques, data engineering, metadata management, and data governance.

This role is expected to drive a positive change throughout the organization (both Business and Technology) by democratizing data insights through decentralized stewardship, governance, and self-service. He/she is expected to show empathy for the customers (i.e. data scientists and analysts) and build feature stores and data products which deliver a delightful experience.

The job may require up to 25% travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • DELIVERY: Architect, design, implement, document and evangelize reusable feature stores and data products for multiple consumers.

  • FRAMEWORK AND BEST PRACTICES: Facilitate the delivery of enterprise wide, production grade, and accurate data products and machine learning models by establishing and standardizing process frameworks for process and best practices.

  • TOOLING: Research, recommend, and implement tooling for agile development of feature stores and data products; including metadata management, data lineage, data quality, data catalogs and data discoverability.

  • TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP: Stay up-to-date with the latest developments and trends in datasets marketplace, data governance, data democratization, and data products. Develop and manage technical architectures and considerations for data products.

  • CODE REVIEW: Provide technical code review for work in feature engineering domain.

  • MENTORSHIP: Mentor and lead the team of data engineers, data scientists, product managers, and data stewards to build and deliver high-quality data products.

  • DATA AS A PRODUCT: Identify new opportunities to leverage data to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs, working closely with business leaders to understand their needs and develop customized data solutions to meet their specific requirements.

  • DATAOPS: Partner with IT and compliance teams to design privacy, security, ethical, and other regulatory controls while maintaining lean DataOps practices.

  • STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP: Actively participate in the development of the company's data strategy and roadmap, working closely with senior leadership.

  • DOMAIN LEADERSHIP: Stay up-to-date with healthcare industry trends and AI technologies, bringing new ideas and best practices to CT&I.

  • PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT MINDSET: Communicate with senior management and stakeholders to ensure alignment of goals and priorities through an unrelenting focus on end users. Develop and track data product OKRs for measurable value creation for the enterprise.

Education :

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required

  • Masters/PhD Degree Preferred

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of overall experience in various aspects of data products (stewardship, governance, architecture, engineering, analysis, reporting)

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering / feature engineering

  • 3+ years of experience in machine learning or data science

  • Domain knowledge of healthcare data

  • Expertise in healthcare protocols and data formats such as HL7, FHIR, DICOM

  • Strong expertise in data science, statistics, and data engineering

  • Strong programming experience in SQL and Python

  • Experience in modern software engineering practices

  • Understanding of modern data architectures such as Lakehouse, Data Mesh, Data Fabric and Clean Rooms

  • Understanding of SQL and no-SQL databases

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and mentor high performing teams

  • Ability to tell a story using data and insights that drives action and change

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multiple teams and stakeholders · Demonstrated leadership in a fast-paced environment with decisiveness, consensus-building, empathy and kindness

Preferred :

  • Experience with test data management, data de-identification and synthetic data generation

  • Experience with data security and governance in a multi-cloud environment

  • Expert in the regulatory aspects of the healthcare domain

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Experience in enabling frontline care providers and citizen analysts with easy to consume data

  • Agile Delivery, Product Management or Scrum Master certifications

  • Experience managing and unblocking teams in GCP platform
