Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.

Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Database are world-class relational database systems widely used across the globe on everything from small devices and servers to some of the largest cloud deployments in the world, attracting application developers and enterprise workloads alike to the cloud. Azure SQL Database is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to be part of the ongoing journey to disrupt the database space with innovative features that get shipped in products as well as get published in premium conferences like VLDB, SIGMOD.

Our team is responsible for mission critical functions such as High Availability, Read Scalability, Storage, online database migration with minimal downtime and Data Integrity for millions of databases. This is a great opportunity to learn and work on the internals of enterprise class relational database engines, solve hard problems, and build a highly scalable and reliable data service. Responsibilities

  • Work on design, functionality, performance, scalability, manageability and supportability of the Azure SQL Database service in the areas of storage, recovery, read scale out and in-memory database storage engine and online database migration with minimal downtime.

  • Work on analyzing, root causing and solving problems at scale in a collaborative environment.

  • Work with technical experts across the globe, acquire and pass on the knowledge to other engineers in the team. Lead by example and mentors others to product extensible and maintainable code used across products.

  • Demonstrate solid customer empathy and participate in live site rotations to mitigate and resolve the challenges faced by customers.

  • Share responsibility of your component health, quality, and live site (with occasional day hours on call, root cause analysis, delivering repair items, and ensuring code is ready for production)

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ Years Hands on experience in troubleshooting, debugging complex problems.

  • 2+ Years Experience providing technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with relational database internals and storage systems

  • Experience with large scale distributed systems, multithreading and object-oriented programming

  • Proven experience in improving product quality and reliability.

  • Good knowledge in the software release process and automation.

  • Torch bearer for good engineering practices such as specs, code reviews, root cause analysis processes

  • Proficiency in C# and/or C++ troubleshooting and debugging, multithreading and high-performance backend systems.

  • Experience building and operating online services and fault-tolerant distributed systems.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
