Phillips 66 Sr. Advanced Control & Optimization Engineer in Houston, Texas

The Senior Advanced Control and Optimization (AC&O) Engineer will be responsible for identifying, prioritizing and executing APC and multi-unit optimization projects. In addition, the position will help strengthen the Advanced Process Controls Network for Phillips 66 Refining by developing and using best practices and training the site engineers to support and maintain the Advanced Control and Optimization applications. Located in Houston, Texas, this position will report to the Director – Advanced Process Control (APC), Blending and Optimization within the Refinery Business Improvement (RBI) organization.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Partnering with the refinery sites to identify, develop and execute APC and multiunit optimization applications.

  • Providing consulting services, including training, to refinery advanced control teams on improving their advanced applications and ensure high utilization of AC&O applications.

  • Developing and implementing best practice standards for increased long-term effectiveness of the APC, multiunit optimization applications and inferential predictor applications.

  • Traveling to the sites as needed to implement and maintain AC&O applications.

  • Assisting in preparing and issuing quarterly and annual AC&O progress reports including key performance metrics.

  • Providing consulting services to refinery advanced control teams on improving their APC and multiunit optimization applications.

  • Vetting software updates from vendors and assisting sites with software upgrades.

  • Participating in APC and process control peer reviews at refineries as needed.

  • Helping in the discovery, selection and implementation of new technologies and practices for Advanced Control and Optimization.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license

  • 10 or more years of experience in the field of multivariable process control and optimization

  • 5 or more years of experience in refining or a related industry

  • Ability to travel up to 50%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Chemical Engineering

  • Refining process knowledge with strong understanding of process units, interactions among process units and business drivers at the refinery level

  • Knowledge/experience with process control techniques including basic and advanced control design and tuning on major refinery process units

  • Knowledge/experience with leading APC and Optimization software such as Aspen DMC+/DMC3, Honeywell Profit Suite, Aspen GDOT, Schneider Electric ROMEO, and other similar software

  • Knowledge/experience with new machine learning tools used for data analytics and process control such as Python and R

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as work as a part of a team

  • Trust and respect – must be able to develop and maintain trust within Phillips 66 and with technical partners

  • Strong commitment to safe work practices

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
