We’re looking for an experienced engineering leader to join our Finance Technology organization and lead the design and delivery of applications and solutions for Finance Data Insights platform in adherence with enterprise controls & compliance. This is an excellent opportunity for a technical professional with knowledge of building data-oriented capabilities at scale with a track record of implementing successful applications in the Financial Services Industry.

As an Engineering Director, you will:

  • Drive the Technology Strategy, Roadmap and Delivery of Financial Data insights (FDI) application that includes Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL) & International Financial Reporting Standard 9 (IFRS9), Forecast and Sensitivity Tool and Risk Model capabilities.

  • Create and lead the migration strategy to move from existing on prem based application to AXP future Cloud platform and implementing the strategy in phases.

  • Drive Data Strategy for all inbound and outbound data within Financial Data Insights application; Reassess input and output data to improve efficiencies across process execution and provide E2E transparency of data in single ecosystem.

  • Seamless integration of Forecast and Sensitivity tool to broader decision science use cases by reassessing existing challenges in sensitivity tool and upgrading the same to a robust and stable environment / infrastructure.

  • Provide technical and leadership oversight to multiple scrum teams in driving and implementing product and platform roadmaps with agility and high quality.

You and your team will:

  • Evaluate enterprise offered solutions, conduct proof of concepts, and provide data-driven findings to explain functional and non-functional capabilities that address our availability, resiliency, latency, and consistency requirements.

  • Participates in development of plans and strategies, practices, and standards related to data management processes, data products, security, and programs for Regulatory applications.

  • Debug data components, identify fixes, and validate / remediate design and/or performance defects.

  • Acute focus on accuracy and understanding of controls for regulatory application.

  • Experience in articulation of testing status, problem management, and multi-functional alignment expectations.

  • Communicate and works with business and product teams to support changes and implementation.

  • Influence vendors to provide solutions and features to meet Amex needs.

  • Seek opportunities to implement innovative technologies and maintain strength of platform health and drive improvement.

  • Participate in coding (at least 50%) and/or hands on implementation and debugging.

  • Ability to mentor the engineers individually in day-to-day activities and long-term leadership path.

  • Assist team members in overcoming day-to-day problems.

  • Analyze, design, program, debug, and modify software for use in local, networked, cloud-based or Internet-related environments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Science Engineering, or related field required; advanced degree preferred.

  • 12 years of large-scale technology engineering and formal management in a complex environment and/or comparable experience.

  • Successful engineering and deployment of enterprise-grade technology products in an Agile environment.

  • Large scale software product engineering experience with contemporary tools and delivery methods in a complex environment (i.e. DevOps, CD/CI, Agile, etc.).

  • 5 years of experience leading and delivering in matrixed organizations and interacting with teams across all lines of defense.

  • 7 years of experience in a hands-on engineering in data/distributed eco-system.

  • To be successful in this role you will need to be a subject-matter guide in Java, Python, spark, Hadoop/Hive with a good knowledge on GCP.

  • Ability to see the big picture with attention given to critical details.

  • Experience with variety of non-functional and functional testing practices demonstrating extensive scale of data, business logic.

  • Evolve roadmap and strategy that demonstrates a comprehensive view of the business including identifying possible future business opportunities.

  • Comfortably deals with balancing evolving needs with limited resources in a fast-paced environment.

  • The ability to set a high bar for the team to achieve goals.

  • A “driver” personality pushing towards planning/execution while balancing the needs for outstanding alignment among teams.

  • Ability to share engineering domain expertise with architects and other specialists.

  • Ability to adapt solutions to meet the broader needs of the portfolio.

  • Develop and deliver impactful new technologies.

  • Takes part in reviews of own work and leads reviews of colleagues' work.

  • Has knowledge of the range of tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)

  • Able to participate in assigned team’s software delivery methodology (Agile, Scrum, Agile XP, Kanban, etc.)

  • Understands and has practical experience with infrastructure technologies and components like servers, jvms, and networking concepts.

  • Application of industry practices, processes, and standards

  • Identifies several ways to challenge existing norms that will continuously improve the product.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience as a leader within a Technology organization and/or in a product development company with experience that compliments the software product portfolio etc.

  • Creation of Engineering Best Practices adopted by a large segment of the technology organization.

  • Creation of tools or other technologies that become integral to the operation of the platform.

  • Successful assimilation of new technology into an existing technology stack.

  • Outstanding influential and collaboration skills; ability to drive consensus and tangible outcomes, demonstrated by breaking down silos and fostering cross communication process.

  • Outstanding ability to work as a team collaborating with peers / product owners across the globe.
