The GE Vernova plant controls product “WindCONTROL” is an integral part of the wind product portfolio and plays an important role to meet grid code requirements. The controls engineer role is a global engineering role where the scope includes design, implementation, and validation of plant control features that meet product grid compliance. The Controls & Operability team is seeking a controls engineer with demonstrated plant controls and controls expertise. The GE Vernova plant controls product “WindCONTROL” is an integral part of the wind product portfolio and plays an important role to meet grid code requirements. The controls engineer role is a global engineering role where the scope includes design, implementation, and validation of plant control features that meet product grid compliance. The broad scope of responsibility provides an opportunity to grow the grid system skills and be part of the team to drive the energy transition.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead development and enhancement of plant controls technologies, covering functional requirements definition, flow down, preliminary design development & documentation.

  • As part of the broader control system design, interface with the turbine controls team and to incorporate operability requirements into the plant controller design.

  • Lead new product developments for new grid feature introduction (voltage control, frequency control, ramp rate control, power curtailment, etc.) supporting the new unit business and service.

  • Work with Fleet Performance Management and Renewable Services team to solve fleet issues and drive product improvements for the installed base.

  • Engage in the effort of defining / documenting operability & grid constraints. This is creating the foundation on which controls architecture and approach can be modified to meet goals of improved transient response at the plant level.

  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, and letters.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the controller development and grid simulation infrastructure

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science from an accredited University

  • Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience (preferably in grid technologies)

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience in an engineering position dealing with controls and electrical and electronic system design

  • Programming experience in C/C++, Matlab/Simulink, or IEC-61131 languages

  • Fluency in English

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Problem analysis and resolution skills

  • Masters of Science Degree in Controls Engineering, Computer, Electrical Engineering or related discipline

  • Experience in design and/or modeling of controls systems

  • Solid wind industry experience with a focus on plant controls systems

  • Familiar with electrical grid operation and power systems control

  • Strong analytical approach to problem solving

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to succeed in a global team environment.

  • Experience with typical controls platforms, favorable with GE's Mark-Vie platform

  • Strong background and experience in real-time control development

  • Experience with the grid market including renewable integration and required services

  • Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, MODBUS, EGD, DNP3, OPC-UA and IEC-61850

  • Demonstrated process orientation in approach to work

  • Experience with data acquisition systems, network and telephone-based remote monitoring, SCADA and building control systems
