Ametek Inc. Production Manager in Garden City, New York

Position Summary:

The Production Manager is responsible for achieving business goals including product cost and quality, schedule adherence and delivery on-time to customer demand. This is a hands-on position that is responsible for maximizing daily production and driving efficiency to improve profitability.

This position plays an integral part in plant operations, special projects, and is responsible for developing and maintaining motivated staff and for developing and achieving budgetary and production targets. This position directly and indirectly leads a production team of 25 to 75 associates, both union and non-union.

This person will ensure that a proper organizational structure is in place that utilizes lean manufacturing processes to direct plant operations, consistent with sales forecasts, production schedules and planned growth. The key to success in this position is consistently meeting production and sales (revenue and profit) goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the production process and influence all relevant support functions to achieve customer fulfillment expectations.
  • Responsible for achievement of KPI's related to shipping volume targets, on-time delivery, past due backlog, customer lead time, efficiency, utilization, and overtime premium expense.
  • Own and drive continuous improvements in manufacturing metrics including quality, yields, cycle time, productivity, and cost. Promote process improvement, and LEAN manufacturing and 5S techniques.
  • Quantify current state product cost standards with goals / plans for continuous improvement.
  • Implement and drive continuous improvement activities through implementation of change management process and best practices.
  • Generate current month and future month's head count requirements plan.
  • Rectify product cost variances to target (root cause and corrective actions).
  • Drive resolution to material availability issues with planning and supply chain resources. Inventory handling/management and accuracy within plant.
  • Timely and thorough implementation of engineering changes. Actively partner in the creation and review of engineering changes when needed.
  • Provide leadership and training to accomplish the company goals and objectives. Provide direction, development and leadership to production supervisors and leads. Schedule staff appropriately to perform production duties and meet efficiency goals.
  • Lead daily production standup meetings at the beginning of shifts with department supervisors to direct production activities and establish production priorities.
  • Develop and track improvement in reduction of planned direct labor hours to earned hours.
  • Coordinate, set up, and implement standard operating procedures for all production operations.
  • Establish and monitor overall performance for product and quality standards; recommend process improvements / quality control programs. Recommend changes in work practices to improve production standards and product quality.
  • Working with manufacturing engineering in setting/delivering labor and production quality standards.
  • Ensure implementation and compliance of health and safety protocol.
  • Maintain a constant awareness of jobs being processed, production issues and equipment malfunctions to quickly determine necessary alternatives to maintain production schedules and on-time delivery.
  • Coordinate with materials department to ensure all needed components are delivered in accordance to the production schedule.
  • Coordinate new product introductions (NPI) with product development department to ensure production ready processes.


Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Must possess solid analytical skills in forecasting and anticipating production needs and capabilities
  • Must be able to prioritize workload in a multitasking environment.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision and have the ability to interact positively and motivate others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with MRP systems; preferably Oracle
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs to include Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule to get the job done.
  • Exceptional communication skills; promoting teamwork and a positive work environment.
  • Experience should include build-to-order manufacturing management experience in medium volume/high-mix production environments, preferably in the military or aerospace industries.
  • Demonstrated history of successful change implementation and implementing of operational excellence improvements such as lean manufacturing, demand flow, and six sigma.
  • Strong ability to communicate with all levels of the organization from the production floor to the executive office; strong interpersonal, leadership, & organizational skills.
  • Familiar with a manufacturing machining environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and familiarity with a variety of lean tools and methodologies including, but not limited to: VSM, Standard Work, Pull Systems & Kanban, Integrated Business Planning, Daily Management, 5S/Visual Management, 3P, SMED, TPM, Variation Reduction and Six Sigma.


Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering or other technical related discipline is required; MBA or other relevant advanced degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a manufacturing environment, including managing salaried and hourly staffs
  • Minimum 3 years using continuous improvement methodologies, LEAN, Six Sigma, etc.
