Job Summary:

Responsible for the creation, operation and evaluation of student programs that enhance the academic, cultural, and social development of the University's diverse student population. Develop new initiatives and build institutional partnerships that advance the vision of a student-centered environment. Consultant for and advise Student Government Association, student organizations, committees, and other student groups on non-curricular activities both on campus and in the greater Galveston community.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop and market student initiatives and programming that will promote high-quality student life experiences and holistic well-being and provide oversight to campus-wide signature student events and programs such as Orientation, welcome Week, Plazapalooza, United to Serve, TGIT socials, movie nights, All Sports Day and Holiday Bingo Night. and others.

  • Responsible for the advisement and supervision of the Student Government Association and other student organizations for the purpose of mentoring, interpersonal and leadership skills for the students.

  • Develop, implement, and oversee NSLS Student Leadership program for students as well as other educational and developmental workshops that foster student leadership and professionalism.

  • Oversee the management of student publications, social media accounts, regular communications through Student Life

  • Develop, implement, and oversee intramural sports programs for students

  • Provide programming and manage daily operations of the Lee Hage Jamail Student Center as well as the Student Study and the game room areas in the Ashbel Smith Building

  • Oversee the registration of and support for more than 100 student organizations on campus

  • Develop and monitor the departmental budgets including personnel needs, operating expenses and facility needs. Includes oversight of the Student Life, Student Government Association, Student National Medical Association Philanthropic and Lee Hage Jamail Student Center Fee accounts

  • Develop and update Business Continuity Plan and implement as necessary

  • Stay abreast of campus services, programs, resources, and other opportunities to aid in the retention of all students and directs students to resources, policies, and procedures to help students address personal or academic concerns

  • Supervise Student Life Staff and student workers and volunteer to ensure success of all Student Life activities and functions.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of student/personal development theory and issues

  • Demonstrated experience in development of student leadership programs

  • Ability to develop, organize, and manage multiple projects to accomplish the goals of the student services organization.

  • Excellent group facilitation skills

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

  • Ability to influence with special emphasis on collaboration and consultation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in Student Life

OR

  • At least ten years of experience in Student Life

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree

  • Five years of experience in a leadership and management role in Student Life

Working Environment:

  • Requires a flexible schedule with some evening and weekend hours

  • Requires the ability to participate in physical activities necessary to deliver and set up displays, special events, and other activities in both indoor and outdoor settings.
