Job Description

Associate Scientist, Small Molecule Process Chemistry

Foster City, CA

Gilead Sciences currently has an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated scientist to join our Process Chemistry group in the Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing (PDM) organization. **This is a site-based position in Foster City, CA

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

  • Plans and executes assigned experiments, with increasing independence, that support Process Chemistry activities and project goals.

  • Independently executes reactions and makes key improvements during reaction, work-up and isolation.

  • Selects appropriate methods and techniques in performing research and avoids reactions and processes that do not scale well.

  • Demonstrates and applies advanced level of understanding of project goals and methods.

  • Maintains familiarity with scientific literature and applies appropriately to research projects.

  • Collaborates with colleagues to develop methods.

  • May lead or participate in specialized technology working groups to support project initiatives and/or experimentation.

  • May contribute to scientific literature and conferences through the publication and presentation of research results.

  • Always works with safety in mind.

  • Prepares and presents updates at project team and departmental meetings that interpret data, draw conclusions, and propose next steps.

  • Follows best documentation practices for robust data recording and compliance (ELN, batch records, etc.)

  • Familiar with manufacturing operations and writes and/or reviews master batch records and safety summaries with limited supervision.

  • Supports group jobs to maintain lab functions.

  • Completes trainings on time.

  • May participate in departmental activities or initiatives to support operations including recruiting and new hire onboarding and training.

  • May support the management and development of direct reports.

  • Applies Gilead Core Values and Leadership Commitments to job responsibilities.

  • Demonstrates good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Works with collaborative communication and problem-solving spirit.

  • Acts as a resource to others in the department.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Master's degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience.

  • Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 7 years of experience is preferred.

  • Experience in planning and executing multi-step synthetic sequences.

  • Familiarity with modern purification and analytical techniques, including HPLC, LCMS and NMR.

  • Well-versed in scientific literature searching software (SciFinder, Reaxys etc.)

  • Strong desire to work in multi-disciplinary teams, learn new skills and proactively solve problems.

The salary range for this position is: $124,015.00 - $160,490.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
