Stony Brook Medicine (Stony Brook University Hospital) Medical Records Specialist/Registrar - Cancer Registry - Per Diem in East Setauket, New York


PositionSummary


At StonyBrook Medicine, a Medical RecordsSpecialist is a valuable member of our team, who provides administrativeand executive support and has the ability to interface with all levels ofmanagement throughout the hospital. Accurately obtain abstract, record and report cancerpatient information from inpatient and outpatient sources in the cancerregistry data base for the purposes of supporting the hospital's mission toprovide excellence in patient care, education, research and planning. Qualified candidates will demonstratesuperior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills whileadhering to our high standard of excellence.


Duties of a TH Medical RecordsSpecialist in the Cancer Registry department may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Additionally, registrars are required to support the hospital'sCancer Program and Breast Program Accreditation Standards by completing alldocumentation and coding specifications in preparation for submission to theNational Cancer Data Base, and meet the requirements set forth by the NYS DOHPublic Health Law 2401.
  • Case finding: locating all internal and external sources ofcancer-related patient encounters, including physician-based hospital practicesand determining cancer eligibility. Includes all cancer-related pathologyreports; all radiation and medical oncology consults and treatment summaries,all inpatient admissions and outpatient encounters. Utilizing all cancer related deathcertificates, all tumor board cases and lists provided to the registry forinclusion and reporting by hospital-based physician practices.
  • Abstracting: accurately recording and coding required data into asoftware program to create a viable, reliable database. All this in accordance with ICDO-3, AJCC -TNM Staging Manual, Collaborative Stage, NAACCR, SEER, Multiple Primary andHistology Rules as well as specifications set down by the American College ofSurgeons/Commission on Cancer and the New York State Cancer Registry.
  • Quality Review: keeping ontop of yearly Standards-setter changes in collecting data, and subsequentsoftware changes and downloads, with the correction of any errors, so that allsubmitted data is accurate and timely.

Qualifications


Required Qualifications:CancerRegistry Certification (Certified Tumor Registrar). High school diploma. At least one year of administrative experience in hospital or healthcare setting. Knowledge of cancer codingsystems (IDCO-3, AJCC-TNM, FORDS, Cancer Program Standards, NAACCR, SEER).Excellent computer data entry and writingskills with ability to process high-volume work load.Associatedegree-level knowledge of anatomy and physiology and advanced medicalterminology.

Preferred Qualifications:Associate's degree or higher.Previous experience in cancer registrysetting, leadership role, with advanced computer and writing skills.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen*
  • Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
