DRAPER CITY Building Inspector I, II, III in DRAPER, Utah

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Chief Building Official, performs technical and administrative work including the responsibility for on-site inspections, review of construction plans and specifications for compliance with city adopted construction codes. This position ensures that all construction within the city complies with all of construction codes as amended and adopted by the State of Utah and Draper City, and other applicable city, state and federal requirements related to construction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Inspects construction for code compliance.
  • Reviews plans for code compliance.
  • Participates in office operations.
  • Investigates complaints.
  • Attends meetings as directed by the Chief Building Official.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education -- High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience -- Related experience preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications --
    • Valid Utah Driver's License.
    • Licensure by the State of Utah to perform inspections of construction projects.
    • At least one certification out of the IRC (International Residential Code) with a steady goal of and the accumulation of all needed certifications for combination inspector in either residential or commercial obtained within 18 months from the date of hire.  

* In addition to the minimum qualifications listed above, *Building Inspector II requires**:

  • Experience -- Two years' experience inspecting construction projects or two years' experience working in the construction industry.
  • Licenses/Certifications -- Certification as a combination inspector in at least residential or commercial.

In addition to the minimum qualifications listed above, Building Inspector III requires:

  • Experience -- Five years of experience inspecting construction projects or five years' experience working in the construction industry.
  • Licenses/Certifications -- Certification as a combination inspector in both residential and commercial in all of the four ICC areas: building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical. Obtain Accessibility Plans Examiner certification in ANSI A117.1 within 12 months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of --

  • International Residential Code in building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical
  • The principles of construction and basic planning principles
  • Building Inspector II and III: ANSI A117.1 for Accessibility

* Skill with* --

  • Reading blueprints and verifying compliance with construction codes as amended and adopted by the State of Utah and Draper City, and general       construction practices and city adopted codes
  • Conducting residential, commercial, and industrial inspections

Ability to --

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with city staff and customers.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Apply word processing and other personal computer applications
  • Work effectively in an occasionally, stressful environment.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with other city staff and representatives of other organizations to accomplish shared and multi-disciplinary tasks

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Typical office setting with comfortable climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Position requires working outdoors. Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding and traverse construction sites and buildings in varying stages of construction in all types of weather conditions. May be subjected to extremely stressful conditions associated with enforcing compliance with adopted construction codes and ordinances. Considerable exposure to stress related to time deadlines. Must drive a motor vehicle. (Position will be required to use a vehicle to drive to addresses and locations throughout Draper City.)
