Job Description

ESG Operations, an Inframark Company, is hiring a Lab Manager to support our municipal wastewater treatment lab. We would ask you to be responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of all Laboratory personnel. You would also be responsible for supervising the Industrial Pretreatment Program staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Allocates work and provides technical direction, assistance, and training to other personnel. Makes recommendations on employees regarding hiring, performance management, salary changes, promotions, transfers, and terminations. Monitors and reviews staff work and coaches appropriate improvement.

  • Trains operators and lab personnel on laboratory procedures, process control analyses, SOPs, and safe work practices. Ensures that all SOPs are followed, and that DOT, OSHA, and other requirements are met. Makes recommendations for improving SOPs. Ensures that all testing performed for state and federal permits and regulations is performed as required.

  • Organizes sampling and testing schedules. Communicates up-to-date lab results to Plant Managers and Operators.

  • Maintains laboratory equipment and facilities. Maintains the laboratory QA/QC program. Communicates with the public, industrial users, and regulatory agencies as needed.

  • Troubleshoots monitoring and analytical equipment problems. Coordinates with maintenance staff and service contractors in troubleshooting and correcting equipment problems, as needed.

  • Performs routine testing, including: pH, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chlorine residual, etc. Performs wastewater plant process control analyses and NPDEs permit monitoring analyses for wastewater treatment plants as well as drinking water systems.

  • Ability to perform pretreatment duties; such as industrial sampling and inspections and grease trap inspections

  • Responsible for the legal defensibility of work performed in the laboratory and pretreatment program

  • Prepares reports for the client and regulatory agencies about Pretreatment activities

  • Keeps abreast of laboratory and pretreatment technology and regulations by attending professional and technical seminars/conferences and reviewing and researching current literature.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience : Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or other applied science and 5 years of laboratory experience; or Associate Degree in Science with 7–10 years of laboratory experience. Must have at least 3 years of managerial experience and at least 3 years of experience in pretreatment/industrial surveillance program and familiarity with conducting and enforcing a Fats, Oil, and Grease Program.

Licenses/Certifications : Must possess a valid Wastewater Laboratory Operator Certification or be able to obtain certification within 1 year. Must possess valid vehicle operator’s license.

Technical : Ability to follow manual & operating instructions. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft applications & internet. Ability to work with basic office equipment & phone systems. Must be knowledgeable in federal, state, and local pretreatment regulations. Must be able to comprehend and enforce the city’s sewer use ordinance, FOG program, and approved Industrial Pretreatment Program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: frequently lift 30-50 pounds; load, unload & move large equipment/tools; access confined spaces; walk and climb stairs. The wastewater treatment environment presents chemical, biological, and physical hazards. Employee must be able to wear and/or use a variety of personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to these hazards and understand and follow safety and maintenance procedures.

TRAVEL

May be required to travel for training, testing and certification.
