Electric Distribution Engineer

Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring an Electric Distribution Engineer to join our Energy Standards Engineering team. As an experienced team member, you will support the technical needs of the electric distribution system and provide in-house expertise to support the integration of renewable resources, effectively support and lead electric standards requests.

This position will be filled at the Engineer III or IV level. The level of selected candidate will be dependent on the qualifications, experience, education, and certification level of the successful candidate.

  • For an Engineer III, a P.E. license is highly preferred

  • For an Engineer IV, a P.E. license is required

This position will reward you with constantly changing, intellectually challenging work where you will be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in electric standards.

In this job, you will have the opportunity to learn our business processes in relation to electric standards including electrical overhead and underground distribution design, over-current protection and coordination, failure analysis, system reliability, materials, and cost analysis. You will work with a dynamic team of individuals providing electric engineering support to our internal and external customers.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Prepare, review, and approve specifications

  • Evaluate products and alternate manufacturers for the lowest system lifecycle costs

  • Assure conformance of standards to applicable laws, codes, and regulations

  • Perform electric failure investigations and analysis

  • Prepare information and reports, communicate findings, and provide opinions/recommendations

  • Conduct studies and research including integration of Renewable Energy, Electric vehicles, and Distribution Automation

  • Perform tests and coordinate trials of new products

  • Monitor changes in regulations and the profession

  • Review and update guidelines for utility engineering practices

  • Determine areas for improvement or greater efficiency

  • Coordinate technical efforts of strategic alliance teams to leverage effectiveness

  • Manage and coordinate project assignments of engineering support staff

  • Provide instruction and consulting on design and construction standards for designers, construction crews and suppliers

Who you are… A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required and ideal candidates will have solid hands-on engineering experience in Electric Engineering, with specialized knowledge in electric distribution systems.

Professional accomplishments in the following are desired:

  • Identifying standards in need of development or maintenance and identifying work needed on problems with designs, materials, or practices

  • Exercise body of knowledge of national and industry standards to apply them to electric construction projects and materials selection

  • Troubleshooting electric distribution engineering issues or investigations

  • Performing cost-benefit analysis and evaluation of materials to be used in the electric distribution system and working with construction crews and engineering teams to develop construction standards
