We're looking for an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer for our Chicago IL office to execute exciting and challenging projects throughout the region. The I&C Engineer will work alongside project teams and under the direction of a local senior I&C engineer to perform the following tasks:

  • Utilize PLC Control systems, SCADA systems, and Human Machine Interface software to effectively design and implement instrumentation and control systems for large water/wastewater projects.

  • Provide programming support for water, wastewater, municipal, and industrial clients in our local office and at client sites.

  • Design and troubleshoot SCADA and Operational Technology networks including PLCs, servers/workstation, network switches and firewalls.

  • Utilize network monitoring and anti-virus software to access network risks and vulnerabilities.

  • Prepare specifications and drawings, write control system descriptions, perform startup and commissioning activities.

  • Conduct site visits and testing and make recommendations for control systems improvements and designs.

  • Work with other engineering disciplines on large, complex projects design projects to incorporate equipment, process, and facility control concepts.

  • Collaborate on proposals and contribute to client relationships and business development efforts.Select and troubleshoot field process instruments.

  • Display strong communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work in a fast-paced consulting environment with multiple deadlines.

  • Drive ownership of health & safety in all aspects of project execution, office and personal environments.

As an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer (I&C) Water/Wastewater, you will play an important part of our electrical and process engineering team as you complete a variety of technical tasks in the design and operation of SCADA systems for water/wastewater treatment facilities supporting our clients in both our local offices and client sites.

Typical duties will include:

  • Evaluate and develop alternative control system solutions that meet client requirements.

  • Develop design reports, specifications, plans, and associated client deliverables for the I&C and SCADA systems.

  • Specify instruments, controllers, computers, servers, ancillary equipment and components, and application software.

  • Assist in defining interface requirements for process valves, adjustable frequency drives, and packaged systems.

  • Develop new and modify existing application programming in PLCs (programmable logic controllers), HMIs (human machine interfaces) and associated components.

  • Participate in consulting, design, construction, planning, commissioning/start-up, training, and close-out phase activities.

  • Create documentation for application software.

  • Work with and Coordinate SCADA system requirements with other disciplines including civil, structural, architectural, process mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical during the design phase.

  • Interact with clients to gain an understanding of their systems.

  • Work with contractors, and sub-contractors to resolve issues during, construction and commissioning/start-up.

  • Collaborate and develop solutions with multi-discipline senior level leaders

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.

  • Instrumentation selection and design

  • I&C or Electrical design experience

  • P&ID development

  • Experience in PLC control systems, P&ID development, control system architecture development, SCADA systems and networks.

  • Experience with industrial PLC programming and hardware implementation: Allen Bradley, Modicon or Siemens preferred.

  • Experience with HMI programming: Rockwell Software (Factory Talk View ME/SE, Components, Historian), Wonderware (InTouch, System Platform, Historian), etc.

  • Experience commissioning of SCADA systems, including troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques to maintain high availability of SCADA systems

  • Professional Engineer License or ability to obtain PE licenses within one year.

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • Experience in water or wastewater treatment process automation

  • Networking experience: EtherNet/IP, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP etc.

  • Database experience: Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL

  • Operating System experience: Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Server 2019

  • Expertise applying the NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, UL 508A, etc
