  • BA required along with at least 10 years of experience in higher education, political, health care, business/corporate communications, or agency environment, with strong issues management acumen.

  • Direct experience serving as a spokesperson and managing complex, confidential issues.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Superior writing and verbal communications skills.

  • Experience creating and executing strategic communications plans to drive proactive narratives and to respond to complex issues.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills and an ability to set priorities and manage multiple, often competing, demands and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment and often under tight deadlines and pressure.

  • Successful track record as an effective communications strategist with a high level of professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, sound judgment and problem solving ability.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a tightknit team and with internal and external partners and stakeholders across complex organizations.

  • Should have a demonstrated record of success in positions of progressive responsibility in communications for a complex and fast-paced organization, preferably a college or university.

  • Should also reflect the sensitivities required to communicate to and with a diverse, multilayered community.

  • Familiarity with Cision and/or Meltwater.

This is a hybrid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. The position is required to work in-person on campus a minimum of three days per week during the academic year. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.

Salary Range: $99,300 - $173,900

Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.   • Acts as a spokesperson on a range of topics and issues, as assigned.

  • Build and fosters local, national, and international media relationships with a focus on those covering public policy issues in print, online, and through broadcast outlets.

  • Develops strategic media relations plans to manage reputational risk as it relates to day-to-day issues management.

  • Support the development and execution of both proactive and responsive communications strategies to address current and emerging issues.

  • Serves on the Harvard Kennedy School crisis communication team, identifying reputational risk and managing media response.

  • Leads the creation of communications materials, including press releases, key messages, presentations, Q&As, social media content, media pitches, bylined articles, website content and other external-facing materials.

  • Generates and implements thought leadership ideas, strategies and tactics.

  • Works collaboratively with University and Harvard Kennedy School Center media relations colleagues to ensure communications outreach and activities are coordinated and integrated.

  • Serves as a liaison to University counterparts, sharing information and best practices, and facilitating the promotion of Kennedy School faculty, research and ideas, students, alumni and institutional news on Harvard.edu, alumni.harvard.edu, Harvard Gazette, Alumni Gazette, and other University communications platforms.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • This role requires availability outside of traditional work hours.

The Director will oversee media relations and public affairs, and will play a critical role in issues management and crisis communications. S/he will cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key reporters, policy influencers, and serve as the key connection between HKS and media relations colleagues within HKS Research Centers and the University. A key responsibility will be ensuring understanding of issues and alignment on strategic messaging and media response across HKS.

The position requires an energetic, strategic thinker with solid public affairs and media relations experience and a fluent knowledge of the public policy issues at the core of the Harvard Kennedy School’s mission. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the ideal candidate will have experience working with senior executives, providing advice and executing strategies to deal with current and emerging issues. The role requires good judgement and an ability to balance long-term projects with new and emerging priorities.

The Director will work independently as well as collaboratively within a seasoned team of strategic communications colleagues in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs. As a member of the Office of Communications leadership team, the Director will be required to work with the other managers of the department to provide input into the budgets and overall management of a very dynamic and talented team.
